This Season's Business Wear
With today's competitive job market, a simple thing like wearing a nicer-looking suit can help set you apart from the competition. But don't get me wrong; wearing the latest designer suits alone won't guarantee that you'll get that promotion you've been waiting for.
It takes talent, smarts and hard work if you eventually want to climb to the higher echelons of the business world. Nonetheless, one thing's for sure: your new stylish threads will leave most of your male colleagues longing for all the female attention you're getting.
This said, the question we are going to answer today is; what should a man look for when buying dressy clothes for business meetings or a formal night on the town?
coats and jackets
This season, formal coats and jackets seem to have taken a turn to the wild side. Simple and clean lines characterize this year's spring and summer jackets, which comprise plenty of hidden compartments, as well as Velcro and snaps replacing the more conventional buttons. It's actually quite refreshing to see the influence of a sportier look blended into more formal clothing.
blazers
This year, look for more tapered suits with generally relaxed silhouettes. Designers are focusing on jackets with a more modern-techno construction, which in plain English means a longer, leaner jacket with softer and less constructed shoulders. Jackets also sport a higher button stance, narrower notched lapels and flap pockets.
Also, look for jackets featuring minimal lining and patch pockets; they'll remain popular for many seasons to come because they can easily be combined with sportier pants to give you a more relaxed appearance.
Separates are also gaining popularity because of their extreme versatility. Separates aren't exactly complete suits, but rather the combination of a pair of dressy pants with a matching blazer, making for a sportier look. Personally, I don't wear separates, but one can wear them occasionally to freshen their style and wardrobe, with a whole new casual yet elegant look.
Wearing casual and dressy articles together is also gaining a lot of popularity at workplaces around the nation. Instead of wearing the more conventional tie and shirt, try pairing up your suits with fine-gauge knits. Stylish V-necks, crew necks and turtlenecks will all look great under a sassy suit.
pants
Although pleats seem to be making a slow comeback, slimmed-down, cuffless flat fronts are still the norm this season.
shirts & ties
Spread collar shirts are still highly fashionable, yet collars are now trimmer than they used to be last season.
This season, "in" ties are skinnier than those we were accustomed to seeing for the past few years. Opt for shiny silks, as well as ties with a matte finish.
shoes
This season's dressy shoes are wide and square at the tips, for both lace-ups and loafers. Rubber and wedge-shaped soles are also part of the newest trend in footwear for men -- a good thing, as these are more comfortable than traditional heels.
what else to look for?
Suit coats and blazers are still predominantly made of wool and other natural fabrics, with blends of stretch and body-hugging materials such as lycra and Tencel, in order to give them a more modern look and feel.
Don't hesitate to purchase solid pattern suits because they will always remain classics. This season, however, keep an eye out for pinstripe and windowpane patterns because they're all the rage this season.
Finally, this summer seems to be all about fluorescent colors. Purple, pink, fuchsia, and light greens are already displayed in stores and on magazine covers everywhere. It's a trend that will likely fade as fast as it came, so if you don't want to replace most of your wardrobe next summer, stick to conservative colors. Great, versatile colors that always remain classics are medium to dark neutrals such as charcoal, black and navy, as well as earthy shades like rust and olive.
