shades of brown

I know that you should always wear black shoes with a black belt, as well as brown with brown. However, is it important that the hue of brown matches, or am I "fashionably incorrect" by wearing different shades of brown? This goes for cordovan, as well. It is only recently that I have paid much attention to my attire, so your help is greatly appreciated.

Your answer depends on two things: your overall fashion sense and your color matching skills. If you're a novice in both areas, then I recommend that you match your shoes with your belt at all times to avoid a potential fashion blunder. With time, as you learn to pick out clothes that suit you and learn to mix and match them properly, you can start trying to pair different hues of brown and cordovan.

If, on the other hand, you're the type to dress impeccably every day, then by all means, go crazy. Mixing up your belt and shoes in terms of different shades is a smart way to spice up any casual or dressy outfit, as long as it goes well with the rest of your attire and it's done in good taste.

Visible Underwear, Seersuckers Rare

Yes, it's that time once again: the day I feature your fashion questions. Whatever the question, I would love to answer each one personally, and with as much detail as possible. But because of the overwhelming amount of inquiries, I will highlight each month's most interesting; your e-mail may even be answered in the process. This week you'll find answers to questions on hiding underwear lines, matching different shades of brown, wearing seersucker pants, and keeping your shirt tucked in.

visible underwear lines

During the summer months I enjoy wearing white/light colored slacks ranging from linen to denim. The one problem I cannot seem to solve is my underwear showing through my pants. Short of not wearing any (not an option, as my mother is still alive), what, if anything, can I do, or should I just get used to my boxers showing?

I'm assuming that a thong is out of the question, right? All jokes aside, your best bet is to wear light colored, tight fitting boxer briefs. Wear white boxer briefs with white pants, and light gray or white ones with light colored pants.

Also keep in mind that the elastic band around the thighs (at the hem) tends to be the first thing that sticks out from under your pants. If you want to make sure those aren't visible, you should wear boxer briefs with less apparent elastic bands, especially around the thigh area. Your boxers' elastic hem should blend in with the rest of your underwear instead of creating an extra layer, which sticks out more when worn under light pants. Furthermore, as a general rule, underwear made from thicker fabrics tend to show more than those made of thinner materials. If all else fails, just go out commando style. We won't tell mom.
