You're finally going away on vacation and the only thing on your mind is the ladies you're going to meet, the sights you're going to see and the party you're going to have. At least one of those can become a whole lot easier by ensuring that you look the part: a man of supreme style.
Part of looking stylish is feeling comfortable, which is why it's important to wear light and breathable clothing (if you're going to a hot climate), as well as comfortable shoes.
So in addition to your credit cards, sunscreen and passport, make sure you also pack some of these fashionable items in your suitcase, and looking cool won't seem so foreign.
The Tops
1- Sweatshirt
A casual yet stylish sweatshirt is the perfect cover-up for a flight or a cool night out, and track jackets are racing to the fashion finish line. Whether it's more up to date or has a retro look, zip-up sweatshirts (like this one by Blue Marlin) and hoodies are a great alternative to a jean jacket, and they are sure to look cool with any pair of pants or shorts you plan on packing.
2- Polo T-shirt
If you bring along one T-shirt on your trip, make sure it's a polo. One of this year's most popular trends, the polo T-shirt is as versatile as it is preppy. Thanks to its polo collar, it can serve as the perfect T-shit to wear for nights out, and it's a great casual choice when paired with shorts, jeans, drawstring pants, or even black pants. Choose an easy color scheme such as navy, white, gray, or black -- such as this Ralph Lauren polo neck in navy and white -- to ensure that it matches as many pants as possible.
3- Short-sleeve button-down
You're away on vacation. You want to look slick while out on the town, right? Well you'll need a shirt to help you achieve that look, while managing to remain practical at the same time. The right shirt can do that for you. This cotton button-down by Kenneth Cole will keep you cool and manages to spruce up just about any pair of pants, taking a casual pair of trousers to a whole other level of style.
The Bottoms
4- Cargo shorts
Whether you're touring the streets of a new city or sitting at an outdoor terrace, shorts will probably be the only type of pants you'll feel like slipping into. Whether you wear them with slides, loafers or sneakers, the right shorts will make the difference between a hot date and an uncomfortably hot date. Cargo shorts like these by Hollister Co. are still pretty popular, as are retro-looking Adidas shorts.
5- Drawstring pants
Lightweight pants are just the ticket for the plane ride (where it tends to get cool), and you'll be glad you have a pair of comfortable pants for nights out and colder days. While white pants, like this pair by Theory, are not the best option for the on-the-go traveler, you've got to admit that they have a laid-back vacation feel. If you're not keen on white then opt for another color, but the key here is to get yourself a pair of drawstring pants. You'll thank me later.
6- Swim shorts
Floral board shorts, like these by Parke & Ronen, are the most stylish kind of swim shorts you can find these days, and with Hawaiian-inspired floral patterns, you can go a little crazy with the trendy trunks out there. If the funky color schemes and bright tones aren't for you, then you can find more subdued colors when it comes to swim shorts. Just remember that this is where you can really go in the deep end.
Shoes
7- Loafers
When it comes to shoes, comfort is key, which is why a pair of casual loafers is a great choice for vacationing gents. You can wear them on the plane, to the hotel, and walk around town in them with ease -- both physically and with the comfort of knowing you're wearing the latest loafer style. Part moccasin, part loafer, these Kenneth Cole shoes are especially comfortable thanks to their elastic back, which practically molds to your feet and makes walking around sans socks possible.
8- Sandals
Thong sandals are great for hot weather and especially the beach, but they're not a great choice for walking around all day -- something you'll likely be doing as a tourist. As a result, slides -- like the ones pictured here, by Kenneth Cole -- are a more comfortable and practical alternative to thongs. And with a cushioned heel, you'll be happy to slide into third base...
Accessories
9- Sunglasses
Aviator shades are still flying high on the fashion scale, so find a pair that suits you best. These Gucci aviator sunglasses will more than complete any look by adding a stylish touch to anything from a T-shirt and shorts, to a button-down shirt and cargos. Classic yet trendy, every man should own a pair of sunglasses that add a whole lotta attitude.
10- Hat
Whether you're wearing a trucker cap or a bucket hat (which looks kind of like a fisherman's hat), you'll want to cover up with a hat every now and then -- especially once "hat hair" kicks in. They were huge last year, and trucker hats are still all the rage, so take advantage of the wide selection out there, from Von Dutch to Hollister Co. Camouflage trucker caps, as well as vintage-inspired ones (such as this one by Hollister Co.) are most popular.
11- Bag
They may be mostly practical, but bags are an important part of your attire. So of course, you want to make sure you carry your weight by boarding the plane or checking into your hotel with a brown and black stylish duffel bag, like this one from Kenneth Cole. Made from microfiber, you can also rest assured that it's durable and practical.
be an international man of style
Going on vacation might be a break from the norm, but it's also a great way to show the locals and other tourists that your style goes beyond borders. And while it's important to research your destination and travel plans, it's also important to pack the right fashion items for comfort and class. And if you look great while cruising the streets and feel great at the same time, you'll always be a first-class traveler.
